The story of Victimized is the story of how Chilean metal announced itself to the world. Santiago’s Criminal — formed in 1991 by Anton Reisenegger (ex-Pentagram, ex-Nimrod) and Rodrigo Contreras — recorded their debut full-length at Estudios Bellavista in early 1994 and released it independently through Inferno, the legendary Santiago metal shop that gave the band not just a platform but a label. The album sold roughly 1,000 copies in its first three weeks — a staggering number for independent metal in Chile at the time — and caught the attention of multinational BMG, which acquired the rights and distributed Victimized across Latin America and Japan. MTV Latino picked up the videos for Self Destruction and New Disorder, and suddenly Criminal were the first Chilean metal band to genuinely break through internationally. The music more than justified the attention: ten tracks of ferocious, tight thrash and death metal with the groove and directness of Sepultura and Carcass, propelled by Reisenegger’s ferocious riffing and the rhythm section of Cueto and Vallejo. Self Destruction, Pressure, New Disorder, Gusano, Stillborn — the record never lets up. The artwork, based on the works of painter G.
