Formed in Tarragona, Spain in June 2016, God’s Funeral spent their entire first year rehearsing and recording this debut demo — and the result is a fully formed, devastatingly heavy statement of intent. El Cristo de las Trincheras is four tracks of dirty, corrosive doom/death metal that reeks of the sepulchre from the very first note. The title, “The Christ of the Trenches” — a reference to a crucifix found on a WWI battlefield — sets the conceptual tone: a record soaked in darkness, loss, death, and rejection, with imagery drawn from the horror and futility of war and the silence left behind. The band draws direct influence from the foundational early works of Paradise Lost, Asphyx, and Gorefest — that particular strain of doom-infused death metal from the early ’90s that moved slowly, hit hard, and made weight feel sacred. Tracks like Tierra de Losas, Himno a una Juventud Condenada, and the closing Interbellum demonstrate a band with remarkable maturity for a debut, anchored by Abel’s low, cavernous vocals and backed by the twin guitar work of Naila and Juan over Sergi’s deliberate, crushing drumming.
