Brussels’ Zardens carry a somewhat unusual origin story for their second full-length: Blackness Unfolds was recorded back in 2013, but by the time it finally saw the light of day in April 2015, the lineup had essentially collapsed — vocalist/guitarist Pascal Moraux, bassist Frederic Kienen, and drummer Oliwar were all gone, leaving lead guitarist Warnacht to rebuild from scratch. Yet none of that turbulence is audible on the record itself. Ten tracks of no-nonsense blackened death metal in the spirit of early Dissection and Mayhem, with modest traces of vintage thrash and death metal woven through the choppy, churning riffwork. The counterbalance between aggression and melodicism is well-handled — tracks regularly open space for a patch of guitar harmony before cracking back into a final gung-ho assault. Battle Rite, The Berserker, and Days of Doom are highlights that demonstrate a band that knows exactly what it wants to say and says it without wasted motion. Raw, honest, and effective.
