Formed in Kiev in February 2015, NordWitch arrived with one of the most confident and fully formed debut albums the Ukrainian underground had produced in years. Mørk Profeti — “dark prophecy” in Norwegian — is 39 minutes of melodic blackened death metal steeped in Satanism, occultism, and Norse mythology, delivered with the precision of a band far more seasoned than their age would suggest. The surprise weapon is vocalist Masha, whose deep, punishing guttural delivery sounds nothing like what you’d expect and everything like what the music demands — drawing inevitable comparisons to Alissa White-Gluz of Arch Enemy and the ferocity of Holy Moses, though always within a decidedly darker and more blasphemous frame. Riffs move between icy tremolo picking and melodic death metal muscle in the tradition of Behemoth, Dark Funeral, and Bathory, with the epic Viking-tinged To Nord Gods standing as the album’s undeniable centerpiece. The cover artwork by Ukrainian artist Vyacheslav Smeshko — depicting the three Norns at the roots of Yggdrasil — is perfectly matched to the album’s thematic ambitions. Mørk Profeti — “profecía oscura” en noruego — son 39 minutos de death metal melódico y ennegrecido empapado en satanismo, ocultismo y mitología nórdica, entregado con la precisión de una banda mucho más experimentada de lo que su edad sugeriría. El arma sorpresa es la vocalista Masha, cuya entrega gutural profunda y devastadora no suena nada a lo que esperarías y sí exactamente a lo que la música exige — generando comparaciones inevitables con Alissa White-Gluz de Arch Enemy y la ferocidad de Holy Moses, aunque siempre dentro de un marco decididamente más oscuro y blasfemo. Los riffs se mueven entre el tremolo picking helado y la musculatura del melodic death metal en la tradición de Behemoth, Dark Funeral y Bathory, con el épico To Nord Gods de tintes vikingos erigido como el centro indiscutible del álbum.
