Cień — “Shadow” in Polish — are a black metal quartet from Kraków who have been carving out one of the most consistently bleak and uncompromising visions in the Polish underground since their formation in 2009. Fate, their second full-length released in December 2017 through Old Temple, is a near-fifty-minute descent into nihilism, misanthropy, and the cold acceptance of death as mankind’s only true destination. Six extended tracks — Downfall, Highest of Humanity, Okowy szaleństwa, Glorious Night, Świt obiecany, My Misanthropic Utopia — move between depressive black metal and doom-laden heaviness, driven by tremolo-picked riffs, melodic yet icy leads, and vocals that sit somewhere between grim and genuinely anguished. Lyrics alternate between Polish and English, circling themes of suicide, anti-humanity, pain, and the deliberate rejection of hope. Produced by Nihil of Furia at Studio Czyściec — a name and a pedigree that guarantee both underground authenticity and craft — with additional electronics courtesy of Ashgan (Exurge) adding further atmospheric depth.
