Bordeaux-based one-man project Broken Down is the work of Jeff Maurer, and The Other Shore — his second full-length, released February 26, 2016 through Altsphere Production — is one of the more genuinely unusual records to come out of the French underground in recent memory. Nine tracks in thirty minutes that refuse to settle into any single genre: the album merges the aggression of hardcore punk and groove metal with the experimentation of industrial music, the melodic reach of arena rock, and electronic drum programming that owes as much to NIN as to Fear Factory. Baïne opens with a sparse, atmospheric minute before Mr Sun (with female vocals from A Disciple of Mr Sun) launches the record into its first peak, and the album traces an unpredictable course from there — moments of quiet softness giving way to pounding grooves, unrelenting screams dissolving into catchiness, keyboard arrangements majestic and then subverted. Lyrically the album concerns itself with artistic freedom, self-expression without censorship, and the act of creating and sharing without apology. Mixed and mastered by Yann Klimezyk at Mon Studio, France. For the tolerant, open-eared metal listener who finds Rammstein too obvious and Ministry too linear — this is something genuinely its own.

Nueve temas en treinta minutos que se niegan a instalarse en un solo género: el álbum fusiona la agresividad del hardcore punk y el groove metal con la experimentación de la música industrial, el alcance melódico del rock de estadio y la programación de batería electrónica que debe tanto a NIN como a Fear Factory. Baïne abre con un minuto escaso y atmosférico antes de que Mr Sun (con voces femeninas de A Disciple of Mr Sun) lance el disco hacia su primera cima, y el álbum traza desde ahí un curso impredecible — momentos de suave quietud cediendo ante grooves aplastantes, gritos implacables disolviéndose en gancho, arreglos de teclados majestuosos y luego subvertidos. Líricamente el álbum se ocupa de la libertad artística, la autoexpresión sin censura y el acto de crear y compartir sin disculpas. Mezclado y masterizado por Yann Klimezyk en Mon Studio, Francia.
