One of the most singular and quietly remarkable records to surface from the Ukrainian underground in years. Pragmatik’s debut full-length Ghost of Light — featuring members with connections to the Drudkh constellation — is seven tracks across 40 minutes that refuse to fit any obvious category. The band describe their sound as “the interlacement of metal forms with an acoustic feeling of flying,” and that description is surprisingly accurate: this is death metal that breathes, drifts, and occasionally dissolves into psychedelic and post-rock textures in a way that recalls Anathema’s moodier moments, the sludge and drone of Isis, and the brooding melancholy of Forgotten Silence — yet never loses its metallic core. Soul Search, Forbidden Wisdom, and Divine Lies anchor the album in genuine emotional depth, while the instrumental Riders opens up a rare atmospheric space. The vocal performance is consistently compelling, and the bass work weaves through the mix with notable sophistication.
