Romania may not be the first country that comes to mind when thinking about black metal’s origins, but Mercy’s Dirge have a claim that few can match: founded in Suceava in 1991, they are widely considered one of the very first — if not the first — Romanian black metal bands. After two demos in the early ’90s and years of silence, they returned with a vengeance, and Live, Raw & Relentless is the document of that resurrection. Eleven tracks across nearly 57 minutes, all recorded live in the studio at Studio Odyssey by Cristi Rangu in February 2018 — no overdubs, no polish, no compromises. The title is not a marketing slogan; it is a statement of intent. The band tears through old-school black/death material rooted firmly in the mid-’80s to early-’90s tradition, with a sound that evokes Celtic Frost, Venom, Marduk, and Atheist in equal measure. Highlights include the chaotic opener Remains of Posterity, the driving Foreseeing the Past, the bass-driven The Bewitched, and the hypnotic oddity Meherat.
