Few bands in heavy music have as many distinct chapters as Corrosion of Conformity, and this 2012 self-titled album marks one of the most significant: the return of the original “Animosity” power trio — Mike Dean (vocals/bass), Woody Weatherman (guitar/vocals), and Reed Mullin (drums/vocals) — recording together as a three-piece for the first time since their ferocious 1985 landmark. It had been seven years since the Pepper Keenan-fronted band’s last record, In the Arms of God (2005), and Keenan’s continued commitments to Down left Dean, Weatherman, and Mullin free to revisit the hard-driving, hardcore-rooted COC identity that predated the band’s southern groove era. Recorded at Dave Grohl’s Studio 606 in Los Angeles with co-producer John Custer and mixed by John Lousteau, the result is eleven tracks of lean, aggressive, and riff-driven metal with the raw energy of their early crossover work tempered by decades of craft — Psychic Vampire, Leeches, El Lamento de las Cabras, The Doom, Time of Trials among the standouts.
