Germany’s Blackslash have been flying the flag for unapologetic traditional heavy metal since 2007, and Lightning Strikes Again — their third full-length, released May 4, 2018 via Iron Shield Records — is widely considered the record where everything clicked into place. Produced, mixed, and mastered at Maranis Studio in Backnang, the album is ten tracks of tightly executed, riff-driven heavy metal from the Black Forest that wears its influences with pride: Iron Maiden’s galloping bass lines and twin-guitar harmonies, Thin Lizzy’s rock groove and melodic interplay, the vocal warmth of classic AOR and NWOBHM, all filtered through the quintet’s own confident and increasingly sharp songwriting. Clemens Haas brings a naturally upper-register, clean vocal style that owes more to progressive rock tradition than to the Halford/Dickinson school, lending the album a distinctive and immediately identifiable voice. The first five tracks — title track, Night City Street Lights, Skyline Rider, Eyes of a Stranger, Illuminate the Night — hit at full speed; the second half shifts gears with the epically minded Steel Held High, the emotional Save My Heart, and the album’s most atmospheric moment, Unknown Heroes, before Right to the Top closes with fists-in-the-air finality. A near-perfect execution of “keep it true” heavy metal, comparable at its best to White Wizzard and Night Demon — and one of NWOTHM’s more underrated gems.

Clemens Haas aporta un estilo vocal limpio y de registro naturalmente agudo que debe más a la tradición del rock progresivo que a la escuela Halford/Dickinson, dotando al álbum de una voz distintiva e inmediatamente identificable. Los primeros cinco temas — título, Night City Street Lights, Skyline Rider, Eyes of a Stranger, Illuminate the Night — golpean a plena velocidad; la segunda mitad cambia de marcha con el épico Steel Held High, el emotivo Save My Heart y el momento más atmosférico del disco, Unknown Heroes, antes de que Right to the Top cierre con el puño en alto.
